Fontanelle Gallery is pleased to present If I Weren't Here, They Would Be, an exhibition featuring new drawings, embroidery, sculpture, and installation by Shawn William Creeden.

Shawn William Creeden is a recent transplant to Portland, OR from Brooklyn, NY where he was a member of the New York Zoological Society. He has steadily increased his knowledge and experience with wild animals by seeking out and studying them in nature, at zoos, farms, backyards, on road trips, day adventures, and in reference books. In turn, Creeden creates charming and well-crafted illustrative drawings, embroideries, and sculptures of the animals and their habitats. He recently published the zine Birds of 1907 featuring watercolor illustrations of birds that have been spotted at his home in Southeast Portland. If I Weren't Here, They Would Be is a representation of Creeden's extensive research and examination of the native fauna of the Pacific Northwest.

The exhibition will host a large-scale interactive installation comprised of an evergreen tree with needles made from yarn alongside a paper mache cave with stalactites wherein viewers may partake in some friendly spelunking. Two-dimensional works will include a number of watercolor drawings and embroideries that feature birds and animals native to the region. In addition, newly crafted ceramic "relics" will be installed in the Parlour display case.

Fontanelle will host programming throughout the month including an afternoon picnic with the artist and nature tour of the exhibition on Saturday, May 16th at 1pm. There will also be a screening of nature documentary films accompanied by a live musical soundtrack on the evening of Wednesday, May 27th at 7pm.

Shawn Creeden studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. He has previously exhibited at The Curiosity Shoppe in San Francisco, CA and AG Gallery in Brooklyn, NY as well as group shows at okok gallery in Seattle, WA and Artists Space, New York, NY. He has played in a number of bands, most recently White Hinterland and Moor Loups.
